About The Music Lesson

Jan Vermeer’s The Music Lesson is a masterpiece of the Baroque era. Created around 1665 as a transitional piece for the artist, it depicts a young student receiving a music lesson from an elder male partner. The painting’s subject is represented with exceptional emotional depth and naturalism in technique, as per Vermeer’s signature style.

One of the most striking features of Vermeer’s use of color and layering in this painting is his masterful application, which suggests the texture of material. This quality element can be seen in various parts of the artwork – from luxurious fabrics to materials like brass or silver that embellish musical instruments displayed on set.

The Music Lesson shows how Vermeer incorporated various sources’ influence, evident by its distinct characteristic linked back to Caravaggio’s paintings that he might have been exposed to during his time at The Guild of St Luke. His limited palette enabled him to provide his works with ranges and depths in colors beyond standard applications; as such painterly skills are evident within this masterpiece.

Today located within London’s Royal Art Collection, one can easily appreciate Vermeer’s outstanding talents by closely observing every element that makes up The Music Lesson’s composition.
