About The Posts

Belgian artist Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) is known for his intriguing and enigmatic works which exist in a realm between reality and dream. The artist’s extremely insomniac nature resulted in a restless disposition, stomach ulcers, and eventual self-imposed confinement to his home near the North Sea. Nonetheless, these experiences are what inspired some of his best work.

Spilliaert created portraits during sleepless nights throughout much of his career which emphasized his fascination with the interior emotional landscape of people. In addition, he painted nocturnal landscapes and windswept beach scenes to find beauty by light from the darkness. His art aimed at entering into a state that conveyed feelings through characteristically minimal compositions that exploited color’s vivid emotional qualities.

The Belgian painter has been offered multiple times at auctions, where the record price for one such piece was 661 thousand US dollars. Spilliaert’s consistent presentation of internally layered environments regarding both people and place went on to become an inspiration for following generations. Many modern artists have taken note in recent years specifically tying him alongside figurative painters devoted to capturing introspective mood or ambiguity among identity struggles within their pieces as well
