About Composition V

Wassily Kandinsky is one of the pioneers of abstract modern art who explored and exploited the evocative interrelation between color and form. In 1911, Kandinsky produced Composition V, a much more abstract work to embody these concepts. Aposition V employs themes that are central to its composition such as, shape and color, but also contains an iconic horse motif. The imagery of the piece is far more complex than previous works within the same era, resulting in an artwork which is much more difficult to discern. Despite the difficulty to interpret it, Composition V stands apart as a distinct contribution to abstract art during its era.

Kandisky’s bold approach reveals his unique vision which gave birth to a myriad of movements within art and culture- firmly cementing his importance amongst the masters of modernism. Through compelling juxtapositions in colour and subject matter, he created an artwork that speaks beyond its time and continues to intrigue viewers centuries later.

Visible in Kandinsky’s painting are unique characteristics consistent with many cubist aspects yet separating it from traditional paintings; showing that he opened new ground for artistic expression in both visual art and music despite having no prior knowledge or experience on either field. He achieved a rooming success with Composition V due to his unprecedented approach — making it a groundbreaking masterpiece for the abstract genre — inspiring generations of contemporary artists that followed him paving his way for innovation within the field of modern art.
