Domenico Ghirlandaio’s Adoration of the Shepherds is an Early Renaissance religious painting that depicts the Nativity scene of Christ’s birth. Commissioned by the wealthy Florentine Sasseti family to showcase their wealth, this masterpiece of Renaissance art combines references to Roman classical age with Flemish art in an integrated way. It is created using oil on panel and measures at 167 x 167 cm.

The shepherds depicted are witnesses to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, arriving soon after his actual birth. The painting highlights the humble beginnings of Jesus by emphasizing his placement in a manger surrounded by animals and common folk like the shepherds. This theme was popular during the Early Renaissance era, which focused more on biblical subjects than previous artistic movements.
