William Blake – Artwork & Bio of the British Painter

William Blake was an English painter born on 28 November 1757 in London, United Kingdom. Blake exhibited artistic tendencies from a young age and was encouraged by his parents. At ten, he enrolled at the Henry Par drawing academy before apprenticing under engraver James Basire. In 1778, Blake started studying at the Royal Academy but quit shortly after due to the strict doctrines of the academy.

Subsequently, Blake began work as a commercial engraver and painter, receiving commissions from prominent individuals such as Thomas Butts. However, Blake’s period of success and popularity was tainted by his bouts of hallucination, and many considered him insane. In 1818, Blake met John Linell, whose patronage resuscitated his finances and led him to associate with The Ancients group.

The Ancients was a group of artists who admired Blake’s works and methods. Toward the end of his life, Blake became a mentor and respected figure in the group. Before he died on 12 August 1827, Dante was commissioned to make a series of illustrations for Dante’s Divine Comedy, showcasing his expertise even in his later years.
