About The Crucifixion and The Last Judgment

The Crucifixion and the Last Judgment is an exquisite diptych attributed to the Early Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck. This artwork was painted during the Northern Renaissance and belongs to the genre of religious paintings. In it, we find two small, painted panels filled with vivid imagery depicting some important elements of Christianity. During the later years of his life, van Eyck created this masterpiece which not only features elements finished by unidentified followers or members of his workshop, but was also a mark of genius from one of the most prominent artists in history. It is currently on view at The Met in New York City and stands as a testimony to Warhol’s incredible talent as an artist.

Jan van Eyck’s legacy lives on, even centuries after his death, through works such as The Crucifixion and the Last Judgment which juxtapose Christ’s sacrifice for the salvation of mankind with The Last Judgment. Every time we look at these gorgeous panels we can almost feel van Eyck’s ability to bring a story to life through vivid colours and scenes painted on canvas or wood. Another famous work that followed this masterpiece and displayed Van Eyck’s creativity even more was The Betrothal Of The Arnolfini: another partook in religious paintings boasting impressive details, symbolism and representation from simple but meaningful stories from medieval times up until today.
