About The Outlier

In 1909, Frederic Remington produced one of his final works before his death that year, titled “The Outlier”. The painting depicts a cowboy riding a horse over a grassy hill at sunset, showcasing Remington’s signature depictions of the American West. Remington was known for producing over 3000 drawings, illustrations, paintings, and bronzes during his lifetime that captured the rugged and romanticized imagery of cowboys, Native Americans and the US Cavalry.

“The Outlier” is part of the Brooklyn Museum’s American Art Galleries exhibit on the fifth floor which showcases Nations Divided from 1860-1910.

Despite being created over a century ago in 1909, “The Outlier” still captures attention today with its evocative portrayal of Western Americana. Remington’s work shows not only technical skill but also an ability to capture the spirit and essence of a time long since past. It continues to inspire artists today who seek to capture similar scenes from America’s history in their own artistic pursuits.
