About Left

The left image of this double portrait is a masterpiece by Italian master Piero della Francesca. The Duke and Duchess of Urbino are portrayed in a beautifully posed and painted painting that captures their regal and resplendent presence. This painting was done in the year 1465-66. With an intense but gentle gaze, the Duke and Duchess are seated side-by side, wearing fashionable clothes with intricate details on their garments. Behind them is a typical late medieval backdrop featuring architectural elements such as arched windows and intricate gothic arches.

The right image of this artwork is the Battle Between Heraclius and Chosroes, which was painted by Piero della Francesca in the same era (1463-5). The figures depicted in this painting feature remarkable attention to detail given to anatomy, drapery, landscape background, and lighting effects; these techniques exaltated aspects of the battle to make it look more real for its viewers. Hercules is also featured beside Christ on the right; this addition brings a classical touch to an otherwise religious theme based painting.

In yet another beautiful example of his works, Piero della Francesca’s Exaltation Of The Cross (C. 1466) can be seen in great detail within this double portrait. Featuring rich blues and reds against a calming backdrop that brings attention to each figure featured in its sculpted form, this depiction communicates passion, triumph, and victory – all of which are strongly connected with Jesus’ crucifixion ordeal. Through carefully crafted symbolism and use of colour/style comparisons between figures on each side of the double portrait – Piero della Francesca showcases his skilled workmanship while offering viewers at unique insight into these two compelling images from his era.
