About Montefeltro Altarpiece

The Montefeltro Altarpiece is a painting by Piero della Francesca, located in Milan’s Pinacoteca di Brera. This artwork was originally completed in 1472-1474, and was deposited to the pinacoteca by Napoleon among other well-known masters. The painting depicts Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, Saint Elizabeth and John the Baptist as master figures who appear weight foreque dark background. This enviable area creates two figures that are most strikingly serve against the ground with inadequate shading.

The artwork is commonly referred to as Pala di Brera, Montefeltro Altarpiece or Brera Altarpiece and is attributed to one of the great Renaissance painters, Piero della Francesca. It is an example of his use of line and light for an intricate composition. His solid execution of colour and geometric proportions has led to this painting being dubbed as one of his most impressive works during his time.

For those looking for another masterpiece by Piero della Francesca – dating back to 1467 – Madonna Del Parto has remained untouched despite many centuries having passed since. Completed just seven years after Montefeltro Altarpiece, it showcases similarities with its predecessor but hints towards Berlinghieri’s influence which helps distinguish it from earlier works by Piero della Francesca.
