About Three Women

Pablo Picasso’s “Three Women” is considered one of the most powerful indictments against war from the twentieth century. The painting vividly conveys Picasso’s anger and frustration at the brutality of war, and its fierce intensity still creates a strong connect with modern audiences. The three towering women in the painting are depicted emerging from a rocky landscape as if they are gigantic sculptures in relief. Their strong chiseled profiles and exaggerated statuesque contours recall late or provincial Hellenistic styles, reminiscent of artworks created in the time of Alexander the Great’s successors. Indeed, these women become part of the natural environment, as they appearto blend into the earth of this composition.

Picasso was also no stranger to creating other emotionally charged masterpieces. “Three Musicians”, another painting from 1921, conveys a sense of companionship, joy and serenity that brings out human emotions at their best. This unique painting is composed with shades of pink and blues flowing around the subjects – different musicians seated together that represent an inseparable portion of life’s noisy symphony. Art lovers will definitely be charmed by this beautiful piece that shows how much people need one another to find happiness.
