About Milan Pieta

The Milan Pieta is a stunning sculpture by Michelangelo, created circa 1555-1564. Also known as The Lamentation of Christ, it depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of her deceased son, Jesus. Michelangelo portrayed Mary as youthful because he believed virtuous women do not age. The artwork is a fusion of Renaissance and Gothic styles, showcasing the artist’s exceptional skills.

Commissioned by a French Cardinal residing in Rome, Michelangelo stated that it was carved out of the most “perfect” block of Carrara marble he had ever used. This sculpture was set up as a symbol of French power in Rome and exhibited for public display. Even though its original location was not Milan but Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, its title – beginning with ‘Milan’ – has stayed unchanged.

The Rondanini Pietà is another sculpture by Michelangelo created towards the end of his life; there were probably three versions constructed. There are several sources that stress how prominent quality marble blocks were to Michelangelo; thus to locate these component parts for his work, he embarked on many travels from Rome into Cararra quarries.

Michelangelo’s craftsmanship emits beauty and elegance through every inch his artwork encompasses; no wonder people worldwide come to appreciate these magnificent works he has created centuries ago.
