The painting “Painting with Green Center”, also known as “Pater mitte” was created by the French-born Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky in 1913. Whilst studying law and economics at the University of Moscow, Kandinsky felt an urge to explore the world of art. This resulted in him exhibiting his first oil painting, “Last Judgment,” at Phalanx when he was 30 years old. He then went on to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for a short period and published theoretical treatises about art.
In 1913, he created “Painting With Green Center” as a depiction of his philosophical and geometric theories regarding abstraction – a medium which he often traded between during this period. Consisting of oil on canvas and being 108.9 × 118.4 cm in size, it is considered to be one of his most iconic pieces from this time. This painting resides at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum alongside many other pieces from Kandinsky himself including “Murnau With Church I.” Painted in 1910 with oil on canvas measuring 50.9 × 51.6″ (129.4 × 131.1 cm), it is considered to be a highly symbolic piece of his earlier works and can be found at The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum due to its immense value both culturally and artistically alike.
