In 1913, Wassily Kandinsky made a bold statement in his non-representational oil painting named “Composition Vi”. This art piece aimed to depict metaphorical events such as baptism, flood, destruction and rebirth. To him this was a way of painting to express inner experiences in life. Kandinsky uses synthetic paint on canvas for Composition Vi which can be found at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. It’s measurements are 195 x 300cm.
Kandinsky created another composition prior to Composition Vi in 19112 called “Composition V”. Considering it is one of his earliest pieces many consider it to be a cornerstone of formative abstract art. What is captivating about this painting is its use of colour, geometry and rhythm all combined into one canvas. Each colour symbolizes an emotion with blues signifying airyness and tranquility whereas red signifies aggression and danger. The piece symbolizes overcoming fear through the use of inner strength. Composition V can also be found at the Hermitage Museum, presented side by side with its previous composition.
