Wassily Kandinsky was a famous Russian painter who revolutionized abstract art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A good example of his painterly genius is demonstrated in “Black Spot I”, a huge oil painting done by Kandinsky in 1912. It is an incredible abstract art piece full of energy and movement. It consists of three distinct areas of colours held in tension by an inflected line. The black lines overlaying the entire canvas create a grid-like structure, which forms the background to numerous colourful shapes that take form – yellow, blue and red geometric elements cascading across the white surface. All these elements together create a vibrant sound on the canvas that perfectly reflects Kandinsky’s creative genius.
Though Kandinsky’s work was revolutionary in his time, many other famous artists have contributed to the development of abstract art – including Frida Kahlo with her piece “What The Water Gave Me” from 1938. By studying iconic works such as these, we can gain insight into this important style of artwork and appreciate its power to move us emotionally.
