About Manuel Osorio de Zuniga

This article section provides a brief but informative description of Francisco Goya’s painting “Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zúñiga”. Completed in 1787-88 and also known as “Goya’s Red Boy”, the painting depicts a young boy, Manuel Osorio, playing with birds and cats while dressed in red clothes.

The portrait was commissioned by the Count of Altamira as one of several family portraits by Goya. It is considered to be one of the most successful and appealing portraits of children ever created, due to its engaging composition and use of vibrant colors. Unfortunately, Manuel passed away at the young age of eight on June 12, 1792, only a few years after this masterpiece was painted.

In this particular work, Goya displayed his exceptional skills in capturing realistic images through the combination of intricate details and soft brushwork. The use of vivid colors also served to highlight key features such as Manuel’s expressions and gestures. The inclusion of animals further demonstrates Goya’s ability to create authentic depictions as they are presented in a natural yet playful manner with Manuel.

Overall, “Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zúñiga” is an outstanding example not only of Goya’s artistic talents but also his love for his family as he honored them through an incredibly beautiful piece that stands out until today.
