About St Anne with the Virgin and Child

St Anne With The Virgin and Child is a painting created by German artist Albrecht Dürer in 1519. The painting depicts Saint Anne comforting her daughter Mary, as she worships the infant Jesus. The use of tempera and oil on panel was later transferred onto canvas. The painting is signed and dated by Dürer in the center of the right border.

The painting is set against a panoramic landscape and features St Anne with her left hand on her daughter’s shoulder in a gesture of consolation. Mary, in a youthful appearance, worships the child with her hands together in silent prayer. The infant Jesus rests against St Anne, with an expression of death. Dürer drew inspiration from Giovanni Bellini and foreshadowed Christ’s death.

It is currently on view and display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The painting was created during a phase of upheaval in Dürer’s work. St Anne With The Virgin and Child stands out for its grandeur and emotional representation of three significant figures in Catholicism.
