About The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry

The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry, an artwork by Ford Madox Brown, depicts the ennobling of the English language by Chaucer. The painting was created between 1845-1851 in Rome and completed upon Brown’s return to England. The artwork depicts rRoundels held by cherubic children showcasing eight poets such as Keats, Shelley, Moore, Campbell, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Chatterton and Kirke White – all important contributors to English poetry.

Ford Madox Brown was a British painter who was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite school. Though not an official member of the PRB himself, he had friendly ties with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others in the group.
