About Perseus

The Perseus Triptych is a series of ten works of art created by Max Beckmann between 1937 and 1950. This is considered one of Beckmann’s most significant pieces. Perseus, the protagonist of Greek mythology, is the focal point of this triptych. Throughout history, several artists have captured Perseus’ heroics in their works. However, Beckmann’s portrayal is unique since he placed Perseus in a modern context and portrayed him alongside contemporary subjects.

Max Beckmann was a German painter, printmaker, and draftsman renowned in The Weimar Republic. During that time, he ranked as one of the top artists and one of the most persecuted by the Nazi regime. The Perseus Triptych and The Beginning are two examples of modern artwork produced by Max Beckmann.

Before his demise in New York, Max Beckmann painted Perseus’ Last Duty. This painting was created in 1950 and differs from the Perseus Triptych. The artwork focuses on Perseus’ final obligation to return the Gorgon’s decapitated head to its rightful place. Despite the painting’s differentiation from the Perseus Triptych, it remains one of Max Beckmann’s remarkable works.
